The Cold War put rival economies to the test on the world stage with the thriving capitalism of the United States overpowering the failing communism of the Soviet Union. The United States, ready for the challenge, proved to be the superior force in what became known as the Space Race. The endeavor into this new frontier brought an urgency for the sake of defense and world peace. The United States’ triumph in space was not only a scientific achievement, but a necessity. In this lesson, students will analyze the differing finances behind the emerging space programs to contrast rival economies, and evaluate the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Act in regard to America’s posterity and its purpose today.
